Lecture by Petr Teplý at Kororo School in Uganda
In July 2025, Prof. Petr Teplý from the Institute for Sustainable Finance visited Kororo Primary School in Kihihi District, southwestern Uganda. He delivered an interactive lecture on the basics of financial mathematics to a group of students aged 13–14, covering topics such as interest rate, savings, and loans.
The visit also included a discussion with the school’s head teacher, Ms. Irene Tumuhimbise, about the challenges faced by Ugandan schools – particularly in the areas of education, sustainability, and climate change.
“It was truly inspiring to see the students’ attentiveness and eagerness to learn, despite often lacking basic educational materials or access to electricity,” said Petr Teplý.
Uganda is highly vulnerable to climate change due to its dependence on natural resources, rapid population growth, and weak institutional capacity. Key challenges include:
-
Extreme weather events (droughts, floods)
-
Threats to agriculture and food security
-
Land degradation and deforestation
-
Water scarcity
-
Health risks
-
Inadequate infrastructure
-
Weak institutional framework.
